It’s not always sunny in Whitby. Here’s a painting I started in February, and recently finished. I do like blue skies and sunshine, but rain and clouds are very atmospheric, and sometimes better suited to my mood…

Boggle Hole. 2012
oil on canvas, 40x100x4cm, £425.
Boggle Hole, a small bay next to Robin Hood’s Bay. It is a favourite space for me, having walked many times along the beach at low tide from Robin Hood’s Bay to visit friends who live there. The painting was partly inspired by the description of Boggle Hole in A.S. Byatt’s “Possession”. Started in 2007, the painting was left unfinished until this year. Currently in the Coast Gallery, Cloughton.
